The city of Sherbrooke has paved the way for industrial manufacturing of 8 million $ that the Interstar company will realize as they leave the old St-Elie sector to move their operations into the regional industrial park. The city will finance the prolongation of Portland Boulevard in order to accommodate the construction of a new 68,000 sq. ft. plant.Interstar is currently in the process of acquiring a lot with an estimated value of a little over 60,000$ and had submitted to the municipal council a three tier development project to be realized over a seven year period. This company, which sells iron oxide pigments and polypropylene fibres on an international level, expects to increase its workforce from 40 to 150 individuals over the same period. In exchange, the city will inject 725,000$ for the prolongation of Portland Boulevard, which will bring it a few hundred metres closer to an anticipated link with Leger street. “This is a good decision. This is a small business that will grow in the future and we can only rejoice in their energy”, was quoted the maire Jean Perreault. Interstar was proclaimed “small manufacturing business” of the year at the last Sherbrooke Chamber of commerce gala. La Tribune (Sherbrooke, Qc) General, wednesday march 20th 2002, p.
